Jewelry Inspired by Nature
|
My life has always been about discovery and balance. I've changed careers a lot – secretary, elementary school teacher, legislative assistant to a U. S. Congressman, college career counselor/teacher, management consultant, massage therapist and now, JEWELER! I strive to be the provocateur of a prettier, more gentle world, a world in harmony with nature. That discovery theme pervades my whole life. As a child, I was always looking for treasure. As an adult, I find searching beaches, or old hardware stores equally exciting. I seem to always be on the hunt - for new ideas, people, experiences. My jewelry is a reflection of my whimsy; I find beach rocks as beautiful as finely cut gems. I like texture and color, but appreciate clean lines as well. Each day is different. I have this feeling that my art exploration is just beginning. In my 40s I got the urge to be more expressive. I began taking art classes at the local community college where I was teaching (back East). Two sculpture classes led me to massage school which then led me to jewelry. I began taking classes at Yavapai College (from Bill Ford, Dick Marcuson, Chelsea Stone, Keith Horst) and then went to Penland School of Arts and Crafts and studied briefly with Tom McCarthy. Teachers teach you their way and eventually the student has to find their own voice; I feel I'm just learning to sing and it's very exciting. |
